In what might have been a catastrophic mass murder, Frank E. Ryan of Waterman, Illinois, has been found guilty of attempted murder when his effort to fill an Elburn home with natural gas was detected in time by the owner. According to Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Lori Anderson, Ryan’s actions “could have been catastrophic, killing many people and destroying multiple neighboring homes.” This afternoon, Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Beginning in August 2008, Ralph Malacara spent 17 months sexually assaulting a pre-teen girl that knew him, and likely thought he had gotten away with it. On Friday, Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser announced that Malacara, a resident of Dundee, would spend the next 15 years in an Illinois prison for his actions. The sentence was the result of a plea deal agreed to by Malacara in exchange for pleading guilty to the offense of predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony. On July 15, the Department of Justice and Virginia-based breeder/research company Envigo entered into a consent decree whereby Envigo agreed to a permanent prohibition on engaging in any activity at its facility in Cumberland, Virginia, that requires an Animal Welfare Act (AWA) license.
