A 44-year-old Elgin man has been charged with the brutal stabbing death of his 33-year-old brother, with whom he shared a residence. On December 18th at approximately 6:59 a.m., Elgin police officers responded to the area of Summit Street and Hiawatha Drive for a check on the welfare of a subject. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male who was taken into custody on unrelated, outstanding warrants. The National Weather Service continues to update its forecast for the major storm expected to hit the Fox Valley tomorrow. NWS has moved up the storm’s expected arrival time, indicating dangerous travel conditions beginning Thursday mid-morning in the western portion of the region. In addition to falling and blowing snow, extreme cold will worsen the dangerous conditions Thursday and Friday as wind chills will drop to as low as 35 degrees below zero early Friday morning. The Kane County Coroner has identified the Elgin man who police found deceased Sunday morning in a residence in the 700 block of Preston Avenue. The man has been identified as Gerardo Hernandez, Male, 33, of Elgin. According to the coroner’s press release, the preliminary cause of death was multiple stab and incised wounds. Toxicology was sent out to a forensic lab and results are pending. The Kane County Coroner’s Office is working with the Elgin Police Department in the further investigation into the cause and manner of death. The Chicago branch of the NWS is warning that a strong winter storm will impact the region Thursday through Saturday, with potential blizzard conditions Thursday evening into Friday evening. While snow accumulation hasn’t been forecast yet, the NWS indicates that the greatest danger will be the strong winds creating blizzard-like conditions, with poor visibility and heavy drifting. Elgin police were performing a routine “health check” on a citizen Saturday morning when they came across a man with outstanding warrants whom they promptly arrested and took into custody. Upon learning where he lived, officers went to his residence and found a dead man. In yet another extraordinary turn of events, Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser has again reversed herself and has cancelled a Grand Jury review of the evidence surrounding the fatal shooting of Ludwig, the beloved dog of Wayne resident Joe Petit, according to an email from Mosser to Petit’s attorney obtained by Fox Valley Magazine. Taxpayers throughout the Fox Valley will be ponying up significantly more for public schools next year as school boards from Elgin’s U-46 to Naperville’s D203 crank up their requested levies significantly, reflecting in large part the spike in inflation experienced during 2022, which shows few signs of lessening. The latest district to drop the hammer is St. Charles District 303, whose Board, citing skyrocketing labor costs and supply chain challenges, voted Monday evening to raise its levy by 5.95% for the coming year.
