A 44-year-old Elgin man has been charged with the brutal stabbing death of his 33-year-old brother, with whom he shared a residence.

On December 18th at approximately 6:59 a.m., Elgin police officers responded to the area of Summit Street and Hiawatha Drive for a check on the welfare of a subject. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male who was taken into custody on unrelated, outstanding warrants. Through further investigation it was determined that the subject lived in the 700 block of Preston Ave. Officers responded to this location and found a dead man inside the residence.

The Kane County Coroner later identified the deceased as Gerardo Hernandez, 33, of Elgin.

According to the coroner’s press release, the preliminary cause of death was multiple stab and incised wounds.

Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser and Elgin Chief of Police Ana Lalley announced today that Mr. Hernandez’ brother is charged with the offenses of:

• First-degree murder, 2 counts

• Armed violence, Class X felony

• Aggravated battery – great bodily harm, Class 3 felony

The accused appeared today in Kane County bond court. Judge Julia Yetter set bail at $1 million, with 10 percent ($100,000) to apply for bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. on January 5, 2023, in Courtroom 305 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
