The Elgin Police Department announced today that an independent internal investigation has cleared the officer involved in the non-fatal shooting of a suicidal subject in January 2024. The investigation, conducted by an outside law firm retained by the city, concluded that the officer’s actions were justified and in compliance with department policies. The incident occurred on January 13, 2024, when the officer responded to a call about a 29-year-old male who was reportedly suicidal. A 36-year-old Aurora man is in custody after what police describe as a “negligent/accidental discharge of a handgun” on St. Charles’ east side Wednesday.
