A 17-year-old girl freed herself from an attempted abduction this morning in the near Channing Park and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Elgin. According to police, this morning at around 9:43am a male Hispanic subject in a vehicle as reporting following a 17-year-old female student in the area of South Channing Street and Fulton Street. Preliminary information indicated that a male Hispanic subject was attempting to speak with the student who continued to walk away from the subject. A 55-year-old Batavia woman died after being struck by a car around 6:48 p.m. last night in the 700 block of East State Street (Route 38) in Geneva. The woman was walking southbound near the center turn lane on State Street east of Sandholm Street across from the Dairy Queen. She was struck by a black 2018 Hyundai Kona driven by a 30-year-old Geneva woman, who was traveling westbound on State Street.  The woman was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva where she later died. Update: Hurricane Ian was downgraded to a topical storm overnight, but that isn’t making it any less of a problem for Floridians. Heavy rainfall continues to inundate the already-saturated state, causing major flooding and power outages across the state. An estimated 2.5 million residents are without power this morning. Tropical Storm Ian is expected to slowly make it’s way northeast back out to the Atlantic today, then verging Northwest, making landfall in Georgia or South Carolina Friday afternoon. Lucy Westlake, the remarkable Naperville teenager who earlier this year become the youngest American woman to summit Mt. Everest, has received yet another accolade, the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, a program of the nonprofit organization Young Heroes Project. Westlake’s award was in recognition of her work promoting water security. A pedestrian was hit and severely injured on the east side of Geneva Wednesday evening, prompting the closure of East State Street (Route 38) for several hours.. The accident occurred before 7pm in the 700 block of East Street, roughly at the location of the popular Dairy Queen. According to an alert from the Geneva Police Department, the pedestrian sustained severe injuries, and the Geneva Fire Department transported the person to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva. The circumstances of the incident are unclear. The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash. This story is developing.

Hurricane Ian made landfall this afternoon as an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane near Punta Gorda in Southwest Florida. At 2:05pm (Central) the eye of Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, Florida as a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. A weather station at Tarpin Point in Cape Coral reported sustained winds of 77 mph with a gust up to 118 mph. Police departments in Aurora, Oswego and Plainfield have investigated a man who apparently sought tours of multiple schools in and near these jurisdictions and found “no credible threat to the general public.” In a posting to its Facebook page, the Aurora Police Department indicated that it, along with Oswego and Plainfield Police Departments, had been made aware of a suspicious circumstance alleging an individual attempting to gain access to multiple schools in the surrounding jurisdictions. For almost a decade, 47-year-old José Arellano of Aurora sexually assaulted two young women that he knew and were under the age of the 13. Arellano posted a $30,000 bond on July 6, 2020 and was last seen Dec. 8, 2021, when he appeared remotely for a hearing. When he failed to appear for the next hearing, March 29, 2022, Judge Salvatore LoPiccolo issued a warrant for his arrest. He remains at large.
