A 23-year-old Aurora man has been sentenced to the 38 years in prison for brutally stabbing his mother to death in 2022.

Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser announced yesterday that Abel Quinones-Herstad has agreed to a sentence of 38 years of imprisonment in exchange for a guilty plea to the offense of first-degree murder, a class M felony. Judge Barsanti accepted the plea.

According to prosecutors, on July 14, 2022, Quinones-Herstad stabbed Edith Gonzalez-Alarcon 26 times with a knife, causing her death. He then traveled to the Wisconsin residence of his brother, where he stated that he had done something bad to their mother and could not go back.

The Aurora Police Department was contacted to conduct a welfare check at Gonzalez-Alarcon’s residence on the 00-99 block of Jackson Place. On the morning of July 15, 2022, APD officers responded to the location and found the body of 55-year-old Edith Gonzalez-Alarcon in a closet. A knife was recovered from beneath a rug in the living room. Quinones-Herstad, who was still in Wisconsin, was taken into custody by the West Allis Police Department.

In accordance with Illinois law, Quinones-Herstad must serve the full sentence. He receives credit for 1,243 days served in the Kane County jail.

ASA Bayer said:  “This was a brutal and heinous crime that forever altered the lives of everyone involved,” First Assistant State’s Attorney Christine Bayer said. “I extend my deepest gratitude to the Aurora Police Department—especially Detective Martyn—and the West Allis Police Department for their relentless work and commitment to justice. I would also like to thank Victim Advocate Martha Martinez for her unwavering support of the victim’s family during this case. We acknowledge the family’s extraordinary bravery and strength. While this sentence brings accountability, we recognize that they will never fully heal from this loss.”
