Kane County is home to a thriving equestrian community, with a conservative estimate of 862 horses and ponies residing across the county, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These horses and more are supported by at least 83 private equine businesses and facilities, including stables, equestrian centers, veterinary services, ranches, farms, therapeutic riding programs and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County mounted police.
The Kane County Board’s Agriculture Committee, chaired by County Board Member Leslie Juby (District 11), began exploring the equine industry’s contributions to the county’s agricultural landscape after hearing from David Canton, owner and operator of C&M Clydesdales LLC in Maple Park, at the committee’s January meeting.
“Some may argue that the equine industry is no longer relevant to the agricultural economy. They may argue that equine operations are purely recreational and have no agricultural impact. While this belief may have some value, it is grossly inaccurate,” said Canton, emphasizing that the equine industry is a vital part of the agricultural economy, contributing billions and supporting farmers who are returning to sustainable, horse-powered operations.
Catherine McKenna, Planner/GIS Specialist with the Kane County Development & Community Services Department, presented preliminary statistics and maps of local equestrian businesses to the Agriculture Committee on Feb. 20. She noted that out of Illinois’ 102 counties, Kane County ranks 9th in the number of horses and ponies.
In response, Chair Juby reiterated Kane County’s role as a proud hub for horse enthusiasts.
“It’s really a big financial driver in Kane County that I believe has been overlooked,” Juby said.
According to the Illinois Equine Industry Research & Promotion Board, the equine industry in Illinois supports over 77,000 horse owners and more than 15,500 jobs.
