A Kane County jury has found 65-year-old Juan C. Avendano guilty of repeatedly sexually assaulting a student in his kindergarten class. Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Matthew Rodgers and Jessica Michels presented evidence that between August 2016 and June 2017 Avendano made sexual contact with the victim, who was a student in his kindergarten class at Bardwell Elementary School in East Aurora School District 131. “Mr. Avendano selfishly exploited the teacher-student relationship,” Rodgers said. “Sadly, the vast majority of child sexual abuse victims are preyed upon by adults they know and should be able to trust. Early this morning, a Deputy with the Kane County Sheriff’s Department arrested a 31 year-old Texas man in connection with an alleged armed robbery that took place in St. Charles around midnight the previous evening. On Sunday, at approximately 12:00am, St. Charles police officers responded to the 0-99 Block of N. 3rd Street in St. Charles in response to a report that an armed robbery had taken place. On Saturday at approximately 5:46 p.m., the Naperville Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the intersection of 91st Street and Normantown Road for a single vehicle crash involving a motorcycle with two riders. They found the motorcycle and riders in a field just south of the intersection. One of the riders was transported to a local hospital by the Naperville Fire Department with apparent minor injuries. The other rider suffered major injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. He was identified as 27-year-old Jaelen Morain out of Aurora. According to the Illinois State Police, a Naperville woman faces charges after she allegedly stabbed another woman in the abdomen during an argument that broke out Saturday as they traveled in a vehicle together down Interstate 94 in northern Lake County. The 24 year-old woman is charged with aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery, both felonies, stemming from the altercation. The altercation occurred at about 6:24 p.m. as the accused and a Clarendon Hills woman were traveling in the same vehicle on eastbound I-94 near Old Mill Creek. Police said the accused stabbed the victim when an argument turned physical.…

The Fox River Ride to Lake Geneva (FRRLG), affectionately referred to as the FROG, started in 2018 and is now in its fourth year. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Batavia, the first year of FROG involved 12 riders, the next year 22. Last year, there were close to 50 riders. Starting in Batavia, home of many of the original riders, at about 7am, the ride heads north for about 62 miles. According to a recently-released report by the North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner, Elgin resident Patrick Madura’s death last summer in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park was likely caused by a bear attack. On Sept. 11, 2020, backpackers initially found an unoccupied tent at campsite 82, a backcountry campsite in the park’s Hazel Creek Area. They later discovered what appeared to be human remains across the creek with a bear scavenging in the area and reported the incident to authorities.
