Juneteenth is the oldest nationally-celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
“The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.”
General Order Number 3, issued by General Gordon Granger to the people of Texas
This year, the African American Coalition of Kane County is again hosting the Juneteenth Cultural Festival in Festival Park on Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21.

This year’s celebration is entitled “Juneteenth Cultural Rhythm & Blues Weekend” and is dedicated to the legendary Buddy Guy.
This is a family-friendly, inclusive event that welcomes everyone to come together, reflect, celebrate, and move forward, together. There’s something for everyone, from vendors to local Live Entertainment, some of your favorites, and talent coming from around the state. Food and fun, and the beer garden will be back.
