A 52-year-old Geneva man has agreed to a life sentence in prison in the brutal stabbing death of his girlfriend and her 13-year-old son.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser announced today that Alejandro Cota has agreed to a sentence of natural life in prison in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to two counts of First-Degree Murder, Class M felony.
Judge Julia Yetter accepted the plea.
According to prosecutors, on December 26, 2024, Cota stabbed his girlfriend, Christina L. Chavira, age 47, and her son, D.C., age 13, multiple times causing their deaths. At approximately 8pm on December 26, 2024, Geneva Police Officers responded to a domestic violence 9-1-1 call at the 2700 block of Emma’s Way in Geneva here they forcibly entered the residence after nobody answered the front door. Inside, they found Cota and both victims. The victims were unresponsive and injured with multiple stab wounds. Chavira was treated by medics on site and transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. D.C., was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center, but succumbed to his wounds and was also pronounced deceased. Cota surrendered to police officers and was transported to the Geneva Police Station.
An autopsy conducted by the Kane County Coroner’s Office found Chavira’s cause of death to be consistent with multiple stab wounds. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office conducted the autopsy on D.C. and found the manner of death to be a homicide caused by multiple stab wounds.
“This defendant committed a brutal and senseless act of violence that took the lives of a mother and her young son, leaving an indelible mark on their loved ones and our community,” Mosser said. “With this verdict, we achieve a measure of justice for the victims and their family, and we hold the accused accountable for these horrific crimes. In my view, this is precisely the kind of case for which the death penalty should exist since even a sentence of natural life imprisonment seems inadequate when measured against the innocent lives that were taken.”
