A suspicious device located in a flower planter in downtown St. Charles resulted in the evacuation of nearby residences and businesses Saturday evening.

According to police, at approximately 10:37pm the St. Charles Police Department received a report of a suspicious device located in a flower planter in the 200 block of West Main Street in the city’s busy downtown area.

Officers immediately secured the scene and, as a precaution, implemented an evacuation and closed Main Street from 3rd Street to Riverside Avenue. 2nd Street was also closed from Indiana Street to Cedar Street while authorities conducted their investigation.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) responded to assist at the scene and determined that there was no threat to the public. Roads were reopened shortly thereafter.

The FBI, in coordination with the Police Department, will continue the investigation.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to to contact the St. Charles Police Department at 630-377-4435.
