A 16-year-old male juvenile from Aurora with known gang affiliations was arrested following a foot pursuit that led to the recovery of a loaded handgun Sunday evening.
According to Aurora police, at approximately 6:36pm investigators assigned to the Special Operations Group observed the juvenile illegally riding an electric scooter in the roadway near Front Street and Jefferson Street.
Investigators attempted to make contact with the juvenile, who refused commands to stop. He initially fled on the scooter, then abandoned it and continued on foot. Officers pursued the subject through nearby residential and parking lot areas before taking him into custody without further incident.
During a search following the arrest, officers recovered a loaded black Glock 19 9mm semi-automatic handgun from a cross-body bag the juvenile was wearing. The firearm contained a magazine loaded with 13 live rounds of ammunition.
The juvenile has been charged with three counts of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (a Class 4 Felony) and one count of Resisting/Obstructing a Peace Officer (aClass A Misdemeanor). The juvenile was subsequently accepted for detention at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.
“This arrest reflects the proactive work our officers do every day to identify threats, act quickly, and keep illegal firearms off our streets,” said Chief Matt Thomas. “When someone chooses to flee from police while carrying a loaded weapon, it creates unnecessary danger for everyone around them. We remain committed to protecting our neighborhoods through focused enforcement and accountability.”
