In a shocking announcement on Facebook, the owner of Batavia favorite Pal Joeys announced today that he intends to close the beloved pizza restaurant, citing “dramatic changes” to the business environment, among other things.
“With so much pain, sadness, and regret, I am announcing the closing of Pal Joey’s. For 14 years in Batavia and 25 overall, I have had the honor and privilege of serving this community. We strived to be more than a place to eat. We made it our goal to be more for our guests and the community and tried to make a difference. I know how much of a shock this is and all I can honestly say is, I’m sorry,” Hamel wrote.

The restaurant, located at 31 North River Street, has been a beloved meeting place for all elements of the community, from youth sports teams to social clubs, and pretty much everything in between.
“In the last years, we have hosted so many celebrations, and shared moments of sadness with you all. I’m so grateful for the memories we’ve made. Over the last 14 years I can honestly say the entire Batavia community, as well as so many others from across the area, have been supported through our business, which makes me very proud.”
Hamel hinted at potentially returning to the business.
“I hope to find a home for a carryout/ catering space where I can continue to offer our famous pizza and more.”
The restaurant will remain open through Sunday.
