Two people are dead and three others in hospital after the driver of a pickup truck swerved to avoid a deer and crashed into oncoming traffic on Plank Road Sunday evening.
According to a press release from the Kane County Sheriff’s office, at approximately 9:43pm on Sunday deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Plank Road and Switzer Road for a four-car collision that resulted in the deaths of two individuals at the scene. Three other individuals involved in the crash were flown via helicopter transport to local trauma centers.
Detectives on the scene indicated that a red Ford F150 was traveling westbound on Plank Road when its driver, 18-year-old Vance Peterson, attempted to avoid hitting a deer, causing his truck to swerve into oncoming traffic and narrowly missing a passing eastbound landscaping vehicle. After hitting the GMC Sierra, the truck was hit by a red Dodge Ram, driven by 30-year-old Baldemar Rodriguez-Lopez, at which point the F150 caught on fire.
Peterson, still stuck inside the vehicle, was rescued after the driver-side window was broken out, having sustained serious burns and fractures. He was flown to Loyola hospital for treatment.
