One man was hospitalized with spinal and other injuries and another sustained minor injuries after both were hit by an out-of-control Chevy Corvette during a street race in Aurora.

On July 13, 2024, at approximately 1:14am, officers responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian accident at 2363 Sequoia Drive in Aurora.

Upon arrival, officers found a 25-year-old male victim lying on the ground with apparent arm injuries. The male was transported to Mercy Hospital and later treated for spinal fractures and other injuries.

During the initial investigation, it was revealed the male victim was recording a 2004 Chevy Corvette and another unknown vehicle drag racing along Sequoia Drive. The male victim and another individual were hit by the Corvette after it lost control during the incident. The second victim sustained minor injuries and was brought to Mercy Hospital by a friend.

The driver of the Corvette has been identified as a male resident of North Aurora. He has been charged with Aggravated Reckless Driving, Street Racing, and several related traffic violations. Further charges may result from pending medical test results.

“Contrary to what is often depicted in popular movies, street racing is not a harmless thrill. It is a dangerous and illegal activity that poses serious risks to participants, bystanders, and the community,” Aurora Police Department Chief Keith Cross said. “The recent incident on Sequoia Drive serves as a stark reminder of these dangers.”

“We urge all area drivers, especially young individuals, to recognize the potential dangers of street racing,” said North Aurora Police Chief Joseph DeLeo. “The Aurora and North Aurora Police Departments are committed to educating the public and enforcing laws to deter such activities. By working together, we can make our streets safer for everyone.”

This incident remains under active investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Division at (630) 256-5330.
