An Oswego man is in custody after being found with a 9mm Glock that had been modified to fire as an automatic machine gun in his possession.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres announced today that Judge Brian Telander set bond at $25,000 for the 18-year-old accused. Telander denied the State’s motion to deny bond.
The accused is charged with two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon – Loaded Machine Gun on Person/Possession in Passenger Compartment of a Motor Vehicle, a Class X Felony.
On June 29, 2023, at approximately 9:03 p.m., Naperville police officers observed a vehicle drive to a dimly lit area of a parking lot in the 2700 block of W. 75t Street and park the car. Officers approached the vehicle, allegedly being driven by the accused, on foot and observed the butt of a firearm protruding from the feet of the passenger in the front seat.
Both the accused and the passenger were removed from the vehicle and, upon searching the vehicle, officers allegedly found a loaded Glock 9mm handgun with one bullet in the chamber and thirty-four bullets in the magazine. The Glock was modified to allow the gun to fire as a fully automatic machine gun. The accused was then taken into custody.
“As demonstrated by this incident and other recent arrests, this department’s proactive efforts to seize illegal weapons will continue to be a priority to keep our community safe,” Arres said. “In this instance, the firearm was modified to make it fully automatic, which is extremely dangerous and highly illegal. Who knows what tragedy our officers may have prevented by removing it from the streets and arresting the person who allegedly possessed it?”
The accused’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 21, 2023, for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.
