A Naperville man was found guilty of attempted murder in the stabbing of his wife his 2019.

Patrick O’Brien, 62, of Naperville, was found guilty of Attempt First Degree Murder (a Class X felony) and Aggravated Domestic Battery (a Class 2 felony). The verdict followed a bench trial that started on August 28, 2023 and concluded yesterday.

On December 21, 2019, O’Brien, who was separated from his wife at the time of the incident, returned to his home to gather personal items. Finding his wife in the kitchen, O’Brien grabbed a large kitchen knife and pointed it at her. O’Brien then proceeded to chase her as she ran to a neighbor’s house for help. He then stabbed her in the chest.

After the neighbor managed to throw O’Brien off the victim, O’Brien stabbed himself multiple times in the torso. The incident was caught on the neighbor’s home surveillance system.

A sentencing date has been scheduled for November 2, 2023. O’Brien is eligible for a sentence of 6 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
