A 62-year-old Naperville man convicted of two counts of First Degree Murder for the beating death of his wife has been sentenced to 38 years in prison by a DuPage County judge.
According to a press release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin, Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh has sentenced Alan Wang man to thirty-eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for fatally beating his wife, thirty-five-year-old Hongyan Yang, in early 2020.
According the prosecutors, on March 8, 2020, at approximately 4:50pm, personnel from the Naperville Police and Fire Departments responded to a call at the couple’s residence regarding a female, later identified as Ms. Yang, who was not breathing. Yang was immediately transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased at 5:54pm. Following an investigation conducted by the Naperville Police Department into Yang’s death, authorities learned that in the evening hours of March 7, 2020, Alan Wang and his wife were in their bedroom and when Wang found texts on her phone from another man, he kicked his wife multiple times. The following day, a relative of the couple called 9-1-1 when it appeared that Yang had stopped breathing.
“The violent beating Alan Wang administered to his wife that resulted in her death, is yet another tragic reminder that domestic violence continues to plague society,” Berlin said. “Regrettably, there is still a significant amount of work to be done to prevent domestic violence, and in extreme cases, tragedies such as what we saw with the death of Hongyan Yang.
“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Violent Death Reporting System, in 2023, the most recent year statistics are available, 1,373 women lost their lives at the hands of a spouse or intimate partner. Tragically, at just thirty-five-years-old, with a full life ahead of her, Hongyan joins those whose lives were lost to domestic violence. I wish her surviving family and friends strength as they continue their lives with just memories of Hongyan to see them through. Judge O’Hallaren Walsh’s thirty-eight-year-sentence, however, ensures that Mr. Wang will never again be in the position to harm another woman, and for that we are all thankful.”
Wang will be required to serve 100% of his sentence.
