Schools on Aurora’s Near East Side put on “secure and teach” status briefly Wednesday afternoon after Aurora police investigated a nearby gunfire incident.
At approximately 3:25pm, an Aurora police officer in the area of High Street and Superior Street heard gunshots. Officers quickly secured the area and located a 23-year-old male nearby whose involvement is under active investigation. The individual was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. No one was struck by gunfire and no injuries were reported.
During a search of the surrounding area, officers recovered a firearm and other items of evidentiary value. Nearby schools were advised to go on ‘secure and teach’ status while officers conducted a thorough search to ensure there was no ongoing threat. The status was lifted once officers confirmed the area was secure.
“We understand that reports of gunfire are concerning, particularly when schools are nearby,” said Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas. “The change in school status was implemented out of an abundance of caution, and there was no ongoing threat to students, staff, or the surrounding community. Our officers responded quickly to secure the area and ensure everyone’s safety.”
The investigation into the incident remains active. Anyone with information is asked to call the Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Division at (630) 256-5500.
