In a bizarre incident involving a driver allegedly flashing a weapon and impersonating a law enforcement officer in an attempt to force another driver to stop, an Aurora police officer reportedly fired a shot that hit the suspect’s vehicle although the suspect was no longer inside of it.
On Friday morning at approximately 9:33am, Aurora Police Officers responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a driving-related altercation in the area of Jackson Street and East Benton Street. The caller stated the other driver was following him, had displayed a firearm, and made statements claiming to be law enforcement in an effort to get the caller to stop.
Officers located the vehicles at the intersection of 4th Avenue and South State Street in Aurora and encountered the suspect outside of his vehicle. During the encounter that followed, one of the officers discharged their firearm once, striking the individual’s vehicle. No one was hit, and no injuries have been reported.
It is unclear what led to the shot being fired and no detailed information on the “encounter” has been disclosed.
Aurora Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene, evaluated the suspect — a 48-year-old man from Aurora — and confirmed he was not injured. The man was determined to have no affiliation with any law enforcement agency and was taken into custody pending further investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing and no charges have yet been filed. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Division at (630) 256-5500.
