A 2-year-old boy was killed and 14 others injured when a car crashed through the front of Portillo’s restaurant on Route 34 in Oswego Wednesday afternoon a little before 2:00pm.
According to Oswego police, of the 14 individuals injured, including the driver, 8 were transported to nearby hospitals and 6 others were treated at the scene and released.
According to Chief of Police Jason Bastin, investigators and a Traffic Reconstruction Officer are conducting a thorough investigation of the crash, but, based on the preliminary findings, the incident appears to be an accident.
“Our investigation is in its early stages, but preliminary information suggests this was a tragic accident,” he said. “However, we are thoroughly reviewing all available evidence, including witness statements and surveillance video, to determine exactly what occurred.”
“On behalf of the police and fire department we extend our deepest condolences to the family [of the child lost] during this devastating time. We ask that their privacy be respected as they grieve this unimaginable loss.”
No additional details have been released and the identity of the driver remains unknown.
