Two people are dead and three others in hospital after the driver of a pickup truck swerved to avoid a deer and crashed into oncoming traffic on Plank Road Sunday evening.

According to a press release from the Kane County Sheriff’s office, at approximately 9:43pm on Sunday deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Plank Road and Switzer Road for a four-car collision that resulted in the deaths of two individuals at the scene. Three other individuals involved in the crash were flown via helicopter transport to local trauma centers.

Detectives on the scene indicated that a red Ford F150 was traveling westbound on Plank Road when its driver, 18-year-old Vance Peterson, attempted to avoid hitting a deer, causing his truck to swerve into oncoming traffic and narrowly missing a passing eastbound landscaping vehicle. The truck then hit a white GMC Sierra head-on. The white GMC Sierra was hauling a trailer and skid steer; three occupants were inside.

After hitting the GMC Sierra, the truck was hit by a red Dodge Ram, driven by 30-year-old Baldemar Rodriguez-Lopez, at which point the F150 caught on fire.

Peterson, still stuck inside the vehicle, was rescued after the driver-side window was broken out, having sustained serious burns and fractures. He was flown to Loyola hospital for treatment.

Two occupants of the GMC Sierra, an 18-year-old male identified as Erik Porcayo-Ramirezo, and a 25-year-old male identified as Rosalio Porcayo-Porcayo, were reported deceased at the scene. The driver, 22-year-old Yahir Porcayo-Porcayo, sustained serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital and are listed in stable condition.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Investigations Division continues to investigate the crash.
