Representatives of the Kane County Board will host several public meetings to present educational information regarding the proposed Special County Retailer’s Occupation Tax Referendum. In September 2024, the Kane County Board approved placing this measure on the April 1, 2025, election ballot to ask voters whether or not to establish a 0.75% sales tax dedicated exclusively to funding essential public safety services. Those services include the Sheriff’s Office, State’s Attorney, Public Defender, Coroner, Circuit Clerk, KaneComm 911, Public Health, and the Office of Emergency Management.

The proposed sales tax would add 75 cents per $100 spent on applicable retail purchases in Kane County, with exemptions for essential items such as groceries and prescription medications.

The revenue generated from this tax would be allocated to public safety initiatives, such as:

  • Supporting law enforcement and emergency response services.
  • Upgrading public safety technology and infrastructure.
  • Enhancing emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
  • Expanding programs to address drug overdoses, neglect, and abuse.

Each meeting will follow a town hall format, allowing attendees to ask questions and provide feedback.

Town Hall Meeting Schedule:

  • East Dundee: Feb. 10, Dundee Township Building, 5:00–6:00 p.m.
  • Elgin: Feb. 24, Gail Borden Library, 5:00–6:00 p.m.
  • Aurora: March 3, Santori Library, 5:30–6:30 p.m.
  • Geneva: March, 10, Geneva Library, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
