Police are investigating the death of an Aurora woman who was fatally struck by a pickup truck near downtown Aurora Thursday evening.
According to a press release from the Aurora Police Department, at approximately 5:46pm Thursday the APD and Aurora Fire Department responded to the intersection of East New York Street and West Park Place for a reported vehicle versus pedestrian crash, where they found a 72-year-old woman suffering from serious injuries.
The woman, later identified as Maria Herrera of the 1300 block of Solfisburg Avenue in Aurora, was transported to Ascension Mercy Hospital by Aurora Fire personnel and later airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Friday.
The DuPage County Coroner’s Office has taken custody of the deceased and will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Preliminary investigations indicate the driver of a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was making a southbound turn onto West Park Place from East New York Street when he noticed Ms. Herrera walking eastbound, reportedly looking at her phone while crossing the street. The driver attempted to stop but was unable to avoid the collision, which occurred at a low speed.
“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of Ms. Herrera during this incredibly difficult time,” said Aurora Police Chief Keith Cross. “This tragedy serves as a reminder for all of us—both drivers and pedestrians—to stay aware of our surroundings and minimize distractions, especially when navigating busy intersections.”
The crash remains under investigation by the Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Division. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact (630) 256-5330 or email [email protected].
