The City of Elgin has announced its groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Elgin Sports Complex. The event will take place on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at 11am at the complex, located just south of U.S. Route 20, east of McLean Boulevard.
The expansion project, with a construction budget of $21,004,250, will add three synthetic turf fields, lighting, and fencing to the 87 acres acquired from the state of Illinois. These additions will help meet community demand for multi-purpose sports fields, particularly for soccer and other recreational programs.
“This project is a reflection of the growing need for additional sports facilities in Elgin, especially for our youth and community members,” said Elgin Mayor David Kaptain. “We are looking forward to the positive impact these new fields will bring to our residents and visitors.”
The Elgin Sports Complex, already a hub for activities such as soccer, softball, volleyball, golf, and BMX racing, will now benefit from improved accessibility with a new roadway connecting Illinois Route 31 to the complex. This second access point has been a longstanding request from users, offering a convenient route to Elgin’s downtown and further supporting tourism and local businesses.
In addition to the sports fields, the $21 million expansion plan includes a new playground, parking areas, walking trails, a restrooms and concessions plaza, a shade pavilion and a bike path.
