For a second straight day, Elgin’s Larkin High School received a bogus social media threat, and for a second straight day the culprit was identifed and arrested.

On Monday, an 18-year-old student was arrested and charged with a Class 4 felony in relation to a threat made against the school.

On Tuesday at 7:12am, the School Resource Officer along with Larkin High School Staff investigated a second school threat at Larkin High School. The student who sent the second social media threat was quickly identified and located and it was determined the threat was not credible.

The juvenile was taken into custody and the case was reviewed by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office which authorized One (1) Count of Disorderly Conduct – Threat of Violence at School (Class 4 felony).

The juvenile was transported to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center pending a future court date.

According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, from January 2023 to June 2024 (the latest reporting period available) there have been 853 confirmed cases of false school threats (“swatting”) in the United States.
