A 36-year-old Aurora man is in custody after what police describe as a “negligent/accidental discharge of a handgun” on St. Charles’ east side Wednesday.
According to St. Charles police, just before 1pm a caller alerted police that a male and two females, one of whom was carrying a small child, were walking in the area between the Super 8 Hotel and an adjacent strip mall in the 1500 block of East Main Street when the caller witnessed what appeared to be a negligent/accidental discharge of a handgun by the male subject.
Officers arrived on scene and observed a handgun in the pocket of the male subject. The male subject was safely taken into custody immediately upon the arrival of police.
There were no injuries reported.
After an investigation and a review of the findings with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, the suspect was charged with Armed Habitual Criminal Class, a X Felony; Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by A Convicted Felon, a Class 2 Felony; Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by A Felon While on Parole, a Class 2 Felony; Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by A Street Gang Member, a Class 2 Felony; Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon – No FOID, a Class 2 Felony; Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon – No CCL, a Class 2 Felony; Reckless Discharge of a Weapon, a Class 4 Felony; and Endangering the Life or Health of a Child, a Class A Misdemeanor.
The suspect was turned over to the custody of the Kane County Jail pending a pre-trial detention hearing to be held today.
