[Editor’s note: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified the police officer who shot the animal as part of the Aurora Police Department. The incident occurred in Elgin, and the officer was an Elgin police officer. We regret the error.]

A man and woman were hospitalized Thursday afternoon after being viciously attacked by their own dog.

At approximately 4:52pm on Thursday, Elgin police officers arrived at the 900 block of High Street where they encountered a dog attacking a male and female who were also its owners.

According to witnesses, the dog had succeeded in biting into and holding on to the female owner’s arm. Seeing this, an officer shot and struck the dog, fatally wounding it.

Officers immediately rendered aid to the owners and both were transported to a local hospital with serious but non fatal injuries.

No information as to the breed or age of the animal has been released.
