March madness isn’t just for basketball, it would seem.

In the overnight hours of Tuesday and Wednesday this week, Batavia was hit by a wave of car burglaries that involved unlocked vehicles.

On Wednesday, the Batavia Police department received multiple reports of criminal trespass to motor vehicles and burglary to motor vehicles. Several unlocked motor vehicles were ransacked, and in some cases, valuables were stolen.

These incidents were focused in the western residential area of Batavia to include the:

  • 300 block of North Jefferson Street,
  • 100 block of North Mallory Street,
  • 0-99 block of South Harrison Street,
  • 0-99 block of South Jackson Street, and
  • 500 block of First Street.

One caller observed a male subject, approximately 5’04” tall, wearing all black clothing near their vehicle. They went outside and yelled at the subject who then ran to a dark colored SUV that was parked on the roadway nearby and left the area. No other identifying information on the vehicle is available.

The Batavia Police Department has requested that all neighbors in the listed areas check their video surveillance systems for activity that might be related to these cases. Anyone having footage or other information related to these incidents is asked to contact the Batavia Police Department.
