Multiple outlets are reporting that Chicago Bears and University of Illinois legend Dick Butkus has died.
Butkus was 80 years old.
According to TMZ, sources indicate that paramedics were called for a medical emergency at Butkus’ residence in Malibu, California early this afternoon local time. He was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene.
On the field, Butkus exemplified the “Black and Blue” Bears of the late 60s and early 70s. Drafted No. 3 out of the University of Illinois, Butkus terrorized opposing offenses with his no-limits ferocity during an era when professional football was far more free-wheeling and physical than today’s game.
Butkus played nine seasons in the NFL, his stellar career ending due to an injury. During that career he earned six All-NFL selections, two Defensive Player of the Year honors and eight Pro Bowl selections.
In 1979, Butkus was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame.
His number, No. 51, was retired by the Bears in 1994.
