A Chicago man was tased by Hampshire police officers Friday afternoon after fleeing the scene of a traffic stop Friday afternoon in Hampshire Township.
At approximately 12:06 p.m., a Kane County Deputy conducted a traffic stop at United States Highway 20 at I-90 in Hampshire Township on a blue Dodge Charger with Indiana license plates. During the course of the traffic stop probable cause to search the suspect vehicle was obtained.
The suspect began fighting with deputies, and then fled from the scene. He was located at the Road Ranger in Hampshire by the Hampshire Police Department. Upon encountering the suspect, he again began to fight with the responding officers, not yielding to the commands provided.
Ultimately, to protect the safety of all officers involved and citizens in the general area, the suspect was tased and taken into custody.
It was discovered that the suspect had a fully automatic firearm located on his ankle, which was properly secured by Deputies on scene. In searching further, a high-capacity magazine was also recovered from the scene.
Medical attention was rendered on scene to the suspect and he was taken by ambulance to Sherman Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Deputies were checked on by medical staff and released.
The 25-year-old suspect has been charged by the Kane County State’s Attorney Office with the following”
- 1 count – Felon Possess or Use Machine Gun Class X
- 1 count – Machine Gun or Automatic Weapon in a Vehicle Class X
- 1 count – Machine Gun Automatic Weapon Class 2
- 1 count – Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapon in Vehicle with Loaded Firearm without Concealed Carry Class 2
- 2 counts – Felon Possess or Use Firearm – Prior Conviction of Specified Offenses Class 2
- 1 count – Attempt Aid and Abet, Possess or Sell Stolen Vehicle Class 3
- 1 count – Resist or Obstructing a Police Officer Causing Injury Class 4
- 1 count – Resist or Obstruct Officer Class A
- 1 count – Driving on Revoked License Class A
- Charges against the defendant are not proof of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the State’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
