The identity of a 4-year-old child killed in a suspected DUI-related crash near Maple Park on October 1 has been released by authorities.

In a press release earlier today, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office stated:

“After speaking with the family, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the identity of the victim [of the crash]: Paiytn Moore, 4 years old, of DeKalb, IL.”

The driver of the vehicle that caused the accident on Route 38 near Maple Park has been charged with multiple crimes related to driving under the influence of drugs, including reckless homicide. On November 22, he was taken into custody without incident at his residence in DeKalb by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of U.S. Marshals and DeKalb PD. He is currently being held at the Kane County Adult Correctional Facility.

According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the driver, 20-year-old Edgar Barrios, has been charged with the following:

    • 1 count – Aggravated DUI Death (Under the Influence of any Drug) Class 2
    • 1 count – Aggravated DUI Death (THC in Blood) Class 2
    • 1 count – Reckless Homicide Class 3
    • 1 count – Aggravated DUI Great Bodily Harm (Under the Influence of any drug) Class 4
    • 1 count – Aggravated DUI Great Bodily Harm (THC in Blood) Class 4
    • 1 count – Obstructing Identification Class A Misdemeanor
    • 1 count – Driving While License Suspended Class A Misdemeanor

“We take a zero tolerance approach to our proactive traffic enforcement to avoid tragedies such as this,” Sheriff Ron Hain said in a statement, “but when irresponsible people get behind the wheel when they should not, we will aggressively investigate the incident to swiftly bring justice to the offender and some closure for the family. I commend the deputies who responded to the crash and our detectives who conducted the following investigation for their intensive work.”

The crash occurred around 6:40pm on Saturday, October 1, when a 2016 Chrysler 200 driven by Barrios, traveling eastbound on Route 38 near Francis Road, crossed the center line into westbound traffic, striking a 2018 Jeep Compass driven by 30-year-old Antwoineia Blanton, also of DeKalb, that was traveling westbound.

After striking the Compass, the Chrysler then struck a 2010 Subaru Forester driven by 30-year-old Katie Petravickwhich of Washington, IL, who was also traveling westbound on Route 38.

Blanton was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Moore, who was a passenger in the Jeep as well, was originally transported to Delnor Hospital and then flown to Laurie’s Children’s hospital with life threatening injuries.

Moore was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.  She was seated in the backseat properly secured in a child safety seat.
