Saturday morning at approximately 8:15am, a 57-year-old man driving a large SUV was killed when his vehicle inexplicably swerved off the road and struck a pole.
The Naperville Police and Fire Departments responded to the intersection of Plainfield/Naperville Road and Gateshead Drive for a report of a vehicle crash, where they found the of a silver 2008 Chevrolet Suburban with significant damage on the side of the roadway.
The Naperville Fire Department provided emergency medical attention to the driver, but he was declared deceased at the scene. The driver and only occupant of the Chevrolet was a the 57-year-old man from Bolingbrook.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the man was traveling southbound on Plainfield/Naperville Road near Leverenz Road. As the vehicle continued southbound on that straight stretch of road, it left the roadway near Gateshead Dr and struck a pole.
During the incident, two other vehicles were struck by flying debris from the collision, but no injuries were reported.
Due to the nature of the crash, traffic crash investigators from the Naperville Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene to investigate. The intersection, as well as parts of Plainfield/Naperville Road, were closed in both directions until approximately 1 p.m.
