After two incidents of gunfire in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day, the Elgin police are investigating the third such incident, which occurred Saturday morning.

At 12:34 p.m., officers responded to the 100 block of S. State Street for an unrelated call when a citizen notified officers they located evidence of gunfire they believed to have occurred during the early morning hours of Saturday.

Officers confirmed that shots had been fired. There were no injuries or property damage reported.

Last year, Elgin suffered the most gunfire incidents on record, 66, beating the prior record of 64 set in 2016.
