The National Weather Service has classified the tornado that swept through Naperville and Woodridge Sunday evening as an EF-3, the third most intense tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.
An EF3 classification indicates wind speeds between 136 and 165 mph. Damage from an EF3 tornado is typically severe.

The Weather Service also indicated that another tornado, an EF0, touched down for a 3.2 mile stretch in Plainfield, causing little damage.
This is the first significant tornado (rating of EF-2 or greater) to occur in the NWS Chicago County Warning Area since February 28, 2017 (Naplate/Ottawa) and the first EF-2+ tornado to occur in the Chicago metro counties since June 22, 2015 (Coal City), according to the Weather Service.
