A 19-year-old Carpentersville man (17 years of age at the time of the crime) has been found guilty of murder in the 2023 drive-by shooting death of another 17-year-old male.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser announced that yesterday Judge D.J. Tegeler found Jimmy Medina guilty of First-Degree Murder (a Class M felony) and Attempt First-Degree Murder (a Class X felony).
Medina waived his right to a jury trial.
According to prosecutors, on the evening of October 25, 2023, Jimmy Medina and his cousin were the sole occupants of a vehicle driving on the 01-99 block of Robin Road in Carpentersville. The cousin owned the vehicle and was the driver. As the vehicle passed another car they knew was occupied, multiple handgun shots were fired at the passing vehicle.
A bullet struck 17-year-old Anthony Aragon of Carpentersville in the head, killing him. A second victim was struck by a bullet in their left hip and required extensive surgery to recover. A third victim was grazed by a bullet and treated at a local hospital. Two others in the vehicle were uninjured.
“This case is a tragedy that claimed the life of a 17-year-old and forever changed the lives of multiple victims and their families,” said Assistant State’s Attorneys Kelly Orland. “I want to recognize the strength and resilience the victims and their loved ones have shown throughout this long process. While no verdict can undo the harm that was done, today’s finding of guilt against Jimmy Medina is an important step toward justice.”
Judge Tegeler set Medina’s next court appearance for August 26, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., in Courtroom 313 at the Kane County Judicial Center for motions and sentencing.
The sentencing range for first-degree murder is 20–60 years (served at 100%). The sentencing range for attempt first-degree murder is 6–30 years (served at 85%).
Medina’s cousin’s case is still pending.
