North Central College in Naperville has a big weekend planned, with gripping theatre and inspiring music on the way.

    The 39 Steps
From Thursday through Sunday, the North Central College Department of Theatre will present “The 39 Steps,” adapted by Patrick Barlow, from the novel by John Buchan. Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel and add a dash of Monty Python, and you have a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre. This two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, over 150 zany characters and some good old-fashioned romance. Performances at the Madden Theatre, 171 East Chicago Avenue, run February 13, 14 and 15 at 7:30pm, and February 15 and 16 at 2pm. Tickets are $12; call 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/show.

    DuPage Symphony Orchestra “Beyond Beautiful”
North Central College welcomes the DuPage Symphony Orchestra (DSO) “Beyond Beautiful” at 3 p.m. in the Wentz Concert Hall. Acclaimed violist and well-known string teacher in the western suburbs, Rose Armbrust Griffin, is the featured soloist in the DSO’s February concert, performing the rarely-heard but gloriously tuneful “Viola Concerto” by Cecil Forsyth.

The concert is framed by two compelling masterworks: Johannes Brahms’ “Tragic Overture,” imbued with powerful melancholy, and Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 6 in B minor,” commonly known as “Pathétique,”but more aptly designated as the “Passionate.” This exquisitely poignant symphony was Tchaikovsky’s final work in the genre, premiering just nine days before his death. Tickets are $5-43; call 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/show.
