Kane County’s courthouse community is heartbroken as Forrest, the facility dog, has unexpectedly retired. Forrest, an English Labrador Retriever, has been a comforting presence at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles since 2017, working primarily with Kane County Judge Marmarie Kostelny. Forrest’s retirement comes following a diagnosis of a mass in his chest, which is causing him to be lethargic and weak, with no appetite.
“Forrest has provided so much care and comfort to those in our problem solving courts, at the Juvenile Justice Center and those working at or visiting our courthouse. He will be sorely missed there. He is now receiving care and comfort from those who love him as we address his medical condition,” said Judge Kostelny, who has recently retired.
The news has deeply affected many in the 16th Judicial Circuit Court. Discussions are underway about the immense benefits Forrest brought to the courthouse and the possibility of investing in another dog to continue his legacy.
“These dogs are incredibly useful,” said Lisa Aust, Executive Director of Kane County Court Services. “Forrest was trained specifically for the courthouse environment and was one of the most amazing dogs I’ve ever seen in action. He had an extraordinary ability to identify kids with severe abuse histories, which often correlated with their criminal behavior. Forrest just knew.”
Forrest’s daily routine involved providing comfort to adults and children in the 16th Judicial Circuit’s many courtrooms. Twice a week, he worked with troubled kids at the Juvenile Justice Center or supported those preparing to testify in court, even sitting in the witness box to provide emotional support.
“He was a mood elevator,” said another courthouse staff member. “For many people coming to the courthouse, just a minute of petting Forrest could make a significant difference.”
His premature retirement is a great loss to the courthouse community, highlighting his important role in providing comfort and support to those in need.
