A 4-year-old Cortland boy was killed yesterday evening when the car he was a passenger in ran a stop sign and crashed into the intersection of Keslinger Road and West County Line Road in unincorporated Kaneville.
According to a report from the Kane County Sheriff’s office, at approximately 5:08pm Sunday evening a red 2017 Chevy Trax driven by Jessica Ortiz, 34, of Cortland was traveling westbound on Keslinger Road and did not stop at the stop sign at West County Line Road. The Chevy struck a white 2016 Toyota Rav 4 driven by Abby Hyslop, 17, of St. Charles, that was traveling northbound on West County Line Road through the intersection. There is no stop sign for northbound and southbound traffic on West County Line Road at that intersection.
The Chevy was occupied by 3 people, all from Cortland: Jessica Ortiz, 34, who was driving the vehicle; Landon Ortiz, 10, who was in the front passenger seat; and 4-year-old Logan Ortiz, who was in the back seat.
Jessica and Landon Ortiz were transported to Delnor Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and were later released. Logan Ortiz was also transported to Delnor Hospital with life threatening injuries and then transported to Loyola Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Hyslop was treated and released at the scene.
It is not suspected at this time that drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor in this crash. Both passengers of the Chevy were properly seat belted including the backseat passenger secured in a child restraint seat.
