A 61-year-old Aurora man has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run involving a bicyclist last month near Hampshire.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser and Hampshire Chief of Police Douglas Pann announced today that the accused is charged with Failure to Report a Crash Resulting in Death, a Class 1 felony; Leaving the Scene of a Crash Resulting in Death, a Class 4 felony; and Obstructing Justice, a Class 4 felony.
The state’s attorney’s office alleges that at approximately 12:40am on July 6, officers from the Hampshire Police Department were dispatched to the area of U.S. Route 20, between Big Timber Road and Gast Road, for a report of a traffic crash involving a bicyclist. Upon arrival, officers and emergency personnel located 27-year-old Ebony Calvillo, of Hampshire, who had been riding a bicycle. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy and found the preliminary cause of death to be multiple injuries consistent with a bicyclist being struck by an automobile.
An investigation led by the Hampshire Police Department identified the accused as the driver of the vehicle, a 1994 Chevy pickup truck. The complaint alleges that, after striking Ms. Calvillo, the accused failed to stop his vehicle and report the accident to police. It also alleges that the accused knowingly concealed the damaged truck by temporarily storing it in a parking lot and having it towed to his house.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on August 12 for a pretrial detention hearing.
