McHenry Man Gets 96 Years In Prison For Fatal Road-Rage Shooting In Elgin

A McHenry man has seen sentenced to 96 years in prison after being convicted of fatally shooting a man and seriously injuring another during a road rage incident in Elgin in 2020.

Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser announced last week that Judge John Barsanti sentenced Dru K. Jarvis to 96 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Last October, a jury convicted Jarvis of First-Degree Murder (a Class M felony), Attempt First-Degree Murder (a Class X felony), and Armed Violence (a Class X felony).

According to prosecutors, in the early morning of August 22, 2020, Jarvis shot two men riding in a vehicle beside his at the intersection of State Street and Kimball Street in Elgin. The vehicle’s driver was struck in the leg, and the front-seat passenger, Francisco Trujillo-Uscanga, was struck in the torso. Mr. Trujillo-Uscanga, who was 41 and from Elgin, died a short time later at Saint Joseph Hospital.

An investigation determined that Mr. Trujillo-Uscanga and a coworker had been driving home from work and had honked their horn at Jarvis’s vehicle when it cut them off. (Jarvis was a passenger.) As they approached Kimball Street, Jarvis’s vehicle pulled alongside the other vehicle, and Jarvis fired multiple shots, fatally injuring Trujillo-Uscanga and severely injuring the driver, his coworker.

One week later, on August 29, 2020, Jarvis committed another shooting on the 300 block of South McLean Boulevard in Elgin. Jarvis was arrested, charged, and in 2021 was found guilty of Aggravated Discharge of a Weapon and sentenced to four years in prison. Jarvis’s arrest in the August 29 shooting helped investigators connect him to the August 22 murder.

“Today’s sentence holds this defendant accountable for a completely senseless act of violence that took the life of Francisco Trujillo and forever changed the life of another innocent victim,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Mark Stajdohar. “The prosecution team is very grateful that the surviving victim lived through this horrific attack and had the courage to testify about what happened that day. We hope he can now move forward with his life. We continue to mourn the loss of Mr. Trujillo, and our thoughts remain with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him. Dru Jarvis will rightfully spend the rest of his life in prison, where he will never again have the opportunity to shoot a gun at another person.”
