The Kane County Coroner’s Office has officially identified the body found Monday afternoon as Shafia Murad, who was reported missing in Aurora on May 28.

The autopsy determined the cause of death to be drowning.

Preliminary investigations by the Aurora Police Department have found no evidence of foul play.

A deceased woman found in a retention pond in the area of North Farnsworth Avenue and Corporate Boulevard in Aurora Monday may be related to a missing person investigation underway.

According to police, at approximately 5pm Monday investigators were conducting follow-up activities related to an ongoing missing person investigation when they observed an object in a retention pond east of North Farnsworth Avenue, near Corporate Boulevard. APD Drone operators responded and assisted with a further search of the area and confirmed the presence of a deceased individual.

The individual has not yet been positively identified, and the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday and the Kane County Coroner’s Office will determine the official identification as well as the cause and manner of death.

The search activity that led investigators to the area was connected to the disappearance of 32-year-old Shafia Murad, who was reported missing last Thursday. After initially searching the outlet mall and surrounding area after she was reported missing, detectives pursued additional leads and reviewed surveillance footage, eventually determining that she had traveled to the area of North Farnsworth Avenue and Corporate Boulevard. Detectives were conducting follow-up investigative efforts in that area when the deceased individual was located.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
