The heroic actions of a Plainfield man who physically restrained his armed juvenile relative and called police may have averted a disaster for a nearby elementary school Friday afternoon.
The male juvenile is in police custody at a local medical facility after police learned he was allegedly plotting a school shooting.
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, at 12:50pm on Friday deputies were dispatched to the 2400 block of Helmar Lane in Plainfield Township for a male suicidal subject.
Initial responding deputies found a male juvenile pinned down by his relative, who had apparently discovered that the juvenile was armed with a firearm. The relative had made the 911 call while pinning the juvenile down.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the juvenile was on his way to conduct a school shooting at nearby Grand Prairie Elementary School when the relative intervened.
Deputies detained the juvenile and recovered a Glock handgun, a backpack which contained multiple loaded magazines, knives, an accelerant, gloves, and other items.
The male juvenile is at the hospital being evaluated by medical professionals, after making suicidal and homicidal statements to EMS on scene.
According to police, there is no ongoing threat to the community, and the investigation is ongoing.
