A 23-year-old homeless man is in custody after attacking a St. Charles police officer with a knife Friday evening on St. Charles’ east side.
According to police, at approximately 11:34pm officers from the St. Charles Police Department were dispatched to the area of East Main Street and Hunt Club Drive for a report of a subject who was reported to be running in and out of the roadway towards vehicles.
The officers were met by the defendant and, after initially attempting to speak with him, the defendant quickly brandished a knife and charged at them. One of the officers deployed a less-than-lethal Taser device on the defendant, while another fired his service weapon, missing the defendant.
The defendant was subsequently subdued and taken into custody, after which he was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, and later released back into custody. One of the involved officers was also taken to another nearby hospital, per protocol.
After police completed their initial investigation, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of Attempt Murder (a Class X Felony); Armed Violence – Two charges for Category 2 Weapon (a Class X Felony); Attempt to Disarm a Peace Officer (a Class 3 Felony); Aggravated Assault to Peace Officer with Weapon (a Class 4 Felony); Criminal Damage to Government Property (a Class 4 Felony); and Resisting a Police Officer (a Class A Misdemeanor).
The defendant was transported to the Kane County Jail for a conditions/detention hearing, where he is currently being held.
