Aurora Police are continuing to investigate a firearm incident that occurred Sunday morning on the city’s East Side.

One adult and two juveniles were taken into custody in connection with the incident but, due to the complexity of the case and ongoing forensic review, they were later released pending further investigative results.

According to police, at approximately 6:50am Sunday Aurora’s ShotSpotter system identified six rounds fired in the 100 block of North State Street. Shortly thereafter, officers learned that both a nearby residence and a church had been struck by gunfire. No injuries were reported.

Responding officers observed at least two subjects fleeing the area, prompting a brief foot pursuit. One juvenile was apprehended near Galena Boulevard and Rose Street. Based on developing information, officers established two perimeters as they searched for additional involved subjects and a firearm. The Aurora Police K9 Unit, Drone Unit, patrol officers, and supervisors responded to assist in the coordinated effort.

During the course of the investigation, officers developed information that firearms connected to the incident had been placed inside a vehicle parked in the area. Officers subsequently obtained and executed a search warrant for that vehicle, resulting in the recovery of three firearms, including a Glock 9mm equipped with an extended magazine and a fully automatic conversion device (auto switch), reported stolen out of East Chicago; a Taurus 9mm handgun reported stolen out of Bolingbrook; and a Bryco Model 59 9mm, along with extra magazines and ammunition.

The investigation of this incident is ongoing and all recovered firearms are undergoing forensic processing and will be submitted to the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) for ballistic comparison and analysis.

“When gunfire erupts in a residential neighborhood, it puts innocent families and places of worship at risk — and that’s something we will never take lightly,” said Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact the Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Division at (630) 256-5500.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000 or via their website at www.p3tips.com/135. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of felony crime offenders and the capture of felony fugitives.
