A 32-year-old Carpentersville man has been charged with multiple felonies after an incident in August that involved the man threatening police officers with a revolver in his home.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser and Carpentersville Chief of Police Todd Shaver announced today that the subject has been charged with Armed Violence, a Class X felony (4 counts); Possessing a Controlled Substance, a Class 4 felony; Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer, a Class 4 felony (2 counts); Aggravated Assault Using a Firearm Against a Peace Officer, a Class 4 felony (2 counts); and Obstructing a Police Officer.
According to prosecutors, on August 28 the subject called 911 three times asking for medical assistance at his home in Carpentersville. Carpentersville police officers responded and immediately called paramedics for assistance.
While in the home, officers found a weapon near suspected cocaine, at which point the suspect, after refusing treatment from paramedics, retreated into a bedroom where officers followed. Officers commanded the subject to come out of the bedroom. Jones, ignoring those commands, and armed himself with a black revolver taken from a bedroom closet, which prompted the officers to fire at the suspect while retreating from the bedroom. The subject was struck by the bullets, eventually surrendered and was transported to hospital for medical treatment. Subsequently, in addition to the initial gun found, and the gun that Jones armed himself with, officers also found an AK-47.
The subject was discharged from the hospital on Monday and moved to the Kane County jail. On Tuesday, he appeared in court for a pretrial detention hearing, during which the State argued for his detention. Granting the State’s petition, the Court ordered the suspect detained in the custody of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office while his case is pending. His next court date is set for October 17 at 9am in Courtroom211of the Kane County Judicial Center.
Pursuant to the Illinois Police and Community Relations Act, any officer-involved shooting must be investigated by an independent agency and then reviewed by the State’s Attorney’s Office. The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is currently completing their investigation to submit to the State’s Attorney’s Office.
