A Streator man has been convicted of murder and attempted murder in the shooting death of 29-year-old Aurora resident Andrew Contreras in January 2021.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser announced yesterday that a jury has found Rodolfo Madrigal guilty of first-degree murder, a class M felony; and attempt first-degree murder, a class X felony.
According to prosecutors, on the morning of January 12, 2021, Madrigal used a firearm to shoot Contreras and another man, Brandon Dlugopolski, killing Contreras. The prosecution successfully asserted that Madrigal’s intent was to kill both men.
“Our sympathy goes out to the families of both victims,” said Assistant State’s Attorneys Lori Anderson. “We’d like to thank the Montgomery and Aurora police departments for their hard work in investigating and bringing this case to a close. We’re also grateful to the brave citizens who stepped in to help that day and later came forward when called upon. This verdict delivers a measure of justice for the victims and their families. The defendant’s actions caused irreversible harm and the loss of a young man’s life, and this outcome reflects the gravity of those choices.”
Judge John Barsanti set Madrigal’s next court appearance for May 23, 2025 at 1:30pm in Courtroom 319 of the Kane County Judicial Center for motions. Sentencing has not yet been set. Madrigal faces a minimum sentence of 71 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Madrigal remains in custody at the Kane County jail. Madrigal is also charged with aggravated battery and mob action in a separate case.
