A Mongomery man is in custody after allegedly firing a gun into the air on New Year’s Eve.

According to police, just after midnight on January 1 the Montgomery Police Department responded to a report of shots fired on the Village’s east side in the 1300 block of Raymond Drive, where they located shell casings and live ammunition outside of a residence with multiple occupants.

The homeowner, who held a valid FOID card, was contacted and admitted to discharging firearms and consented to a search of the residence. Officers seized three handguns and additional ammunition during the search. Responding Officers determined there was no further threat to public safety.

The suspect, age 23, was taken into custody and charged with a Class 4 felony for reckless discharge of a weapon.

In its press release, Montgomery police emphasized that the reckless use of a firearm is a serious offense that poses significant risks to public safety.
