The second fire this month at Elgin’s so-called “Tent City” Thursday evening destroyed three stuctures and killed a dog, authorities say.

According to the Elgin Fire Department, firefighters responded to a fire at the homeless encampment near State and Wing Streets at 11:49pm on Thursday, where they found three structures fully engulfed in flames. While crews faced subzero temperatures and a 500-foot hose stretch, the fires were extinguished within 30 minutes. Nearby Metra trains were halted for safety reasons.

There were no injuries reported among residents or firefighters. During a search of the area affected, firefighters discovered the remains of a dog.

The fire’s cause is under investigation, but initial findings suggest it was accidental.

This is the second fire at the encampment in December. On December 4, a similar fire broke out, also destroying three structures and resulting in no injuries.

Authorities indicated that community members may continue to assist in the following ways most effectively:

    • Make Monetary Donations – Contributions can be directed to Elgin Cooperative Ministries, which provides daily hot meals to those in need. Financial support allows for flexibility in addressing specific needs as they arise. Donate here: elgincoopministry.com/donate
    • ➡️ Volunteer for the Warming Shelter – The City of Elgin is sponsoring an overnight warming shelter to provide a safe and warm space for individuals experiencing homelessness.
