A 48-year-old Batavia man was killed early Saturday morning when the vehicle he was driving went off the road near Sugar Grove and hit a utility pole.

According to a press release from the Kane County Sheriff’s office, at approximately 2:53am Saturday morning, officers were dispatched to the 2S800 block of Bliss Road in Sugar Grove Township where they found a 2007 silver Chevrolet Impala facing south in the east ditch on Bliss Road. The vehicle had significant visible damage to the drivers portion of the vehicle, and the single occupant of the vehicle, identified as Ariel Martinez, was critically injured.

Deputies, along with personnel from the Elburn Fire and Countryside Fire Protection District, extricated Mr. Martinez from the vehicle and assisted with medical attention at the scene. The Elburn Fire Department then transported Mr. Martinez to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff a short time later.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the Chevrolet Impala was northbound on Bliss Road when it left the roadway for unknown reasons. It was confirmed that Mr. Martinez wore a seatbelt during the crash, but the airbags within his vehicle did not deploy.

At this time, the cause of the crash is still being investigated by the Kane County Investigations Division.
